5Worth every penny (to me)
By W. Seidel
Let me first warn readers of this review that my skill in visual astronomy is intermediate and only recently revived. My skill in astrophotography is near nil. So take this accordingly.

The telescope I purchased came from [...]. The salesman was very knowledgeable and helpful. They shipped it same day my CC payment cleared. The boxes came in scary condition, but the OTA, mount, and tripod were all in excellent condition-- well packed. The tripod had some minor scratches and one of the bolts on the head looked like it had been turned with too small an Allen wrench, but no harm. All was solid and every part moved smoothly.

Once I had the assembly of the tripod, CGEM DX mount completed I slid the OTA in place, adjusted the counter weight and OTA balance, all was well with the world. I powered up the mount, used the two-star alignment and after stopping to get my polar axis more accurately on that area 1 degree of of Polaris (Close to it anyways)and using the 23mm Celestron Axiom wide-field eyepiece I was viewing a few of the easier NGCs (M51 & M31) as well as Jupiter I knew I had made a smart purchase. This scope and mount are heavy yet quite stable. The tripod is a true beast and the scope sits at Home position at over 6.5 feet tall. However, it only takes me about ten minutes, taking my time to setup or breakdown. I like that a lot. I upgraded from a Meade MTS-SN8 on an equatorial fork mount and it had some stability issues.

Of course, I could have had all those fine views with a larger Dob, maybe a nice 16", but I decided to get into astrophotography and after much research came across this scope and mount due to its GEM vs. Dob mount. I also cut-to-chase by buying an Orion Awesome Autoguider kit with an Orion Short Tube 80 and Orion StarGuider CCD device. I could not use the rail/ring kit that came with it so I ordered a D series rail/ 108mm ring kit and the Short Tube mounts beautifully. However, as many who have been this way before know too well, the balance was of. I need another counter-weight for the mount. I also had to slide the OTA to near the edge of the dovetail plate, but now the OTA balances nicely in declination as well as RA.

While I am new to this scope etc.. I have to say I feel really good when I use it. I plan to own this telescope of a very long time and consider it a great investment. My wife already gives me "the look" whenever I talk about the new addition to the family, so it's a keeper.
