  • Enables automatic alignment of your Celestron computerized telescope
  • No need to identify or locate any star in the sky
  • Aligns in 3 minutes or less
  • Provides advanced mount modeling
  • StarSense hand controller included

Product Description

The revolutionary technology in the award-winning SkyProdigy telescope is now available for almost every Celestron computerized telescope.   Before StarSense, using a computerized telescope required a lengthy alignment process of finding and centering at least two bright stars in the telescope’s eyepiece. But StarSense automatically aligns itself, no user input needed. With StarSense, you become an instant astronomer—even if you’ve never used a telescope before.   StarSense is not only compatible with all of Celestron’s current computerized telescope models, but backwards compatible with many older models as well. (See compatibility list below.)   The StarSense Accessory includes a small digital camera that attaches to the telescope’s optical tube, along with a specialized hand controller. Just set up the accessory, push the Align button on the hand controller, and StarSense starts capturing and comparing images of the night sky against its internal database of 40,000 celestial objects. In about three minutes, StarSense will gather enough information to triangulate its position and align itself. Then, press the Sky Tour button: StarSense will automatically slew to all the best stars, planets, galaxies, and more based on your exact time and location.   Even the most advanced telescope users will love using the affordable StarSense Accessory. StarSense replaces expensive software used for Advanced Mount Modeling, providing superior pointing accuracy from horizon to horizon. Users can add as many calibration stars as desired to give their telescope mount a new level of accuracy.   Compatibility List NexStar SE Series CPC, CPC DX NexStar GPS Series CGE Pro Advanced VX CG-5 CGEM, CGEM DX CGE NexStar SLT (with Aux Splitter) LCM (with Aux Splitter) Enables automatic alignment of your Celestron computerized telescope. 2Be thankful it is not in stock.
By Stew57
The Starsense is not ready for prime time yet. The firmware is being updated a lot and is still not working. The ASPA function does not work. The unit is not as accurate as a 2+4 alignment if it doesn't lock up on you doing an auto align. If you do a manual align and want accuracy, you will have to do a calibrate center. After doing this calibration you are required to go through an alignment again. I thought this was supposed to save time. Do yourself a favor and wait for Celestron to finish the beta testing and get it working before purchase.

Seems it is those with a GEM having the most problems at the moment. Beta firmware is making a lot of progress. Still wait is my advice. The device has a lot of promise just not yet finished.

Edit;
With latest firmware updates the SSA has a slightly better pointing accuracy than a 2+4 alignment. Recalibration for removal and reinstallation of the SSA is still needed for greatest accuracy but is not mandatory for the unit to align, it just won't point as accurate as it can. Celestron is working hard on fixing the problems. When the ASPA is fixed and the auto align function no longer locks up it is a solid 4 stars.

4Celestron C5 spotting scope
By T Chan
I recieved this spotting scope one month ago. Even thought it is made in China (the price already implied that), the quality of the 5" optical tube is very good. The XLT coating is perfect and the focus knob is very smooth and precise. The package comes with a 6x30 erect image finder scope and a 25mm eye piece. The 25mm eye piece contributes 48X image good enough for a bright shape image for terrestial observation. The high light gathering power is excellent for me to observe the night view of Victory Harbour of Hong Kong! Simply replace with a 10mm eyepiece and you can use it as a 125X telescope to observe deep sky and the moon in great details. The image of the moon is simply impressive!

This C5 is absolutely portable and easily mounted on a tripod for birds watching and photography. Remember to use a stable tripod. It is also recommended to use high quality eye piece to match with the excellent optics!

5Good Quality Image and Solid Instrument
By WBS77
The light-gathering capability of the C5 is exactly what I hoped for in a spotting scope. Able to see considerable detail even at high magnification. Appears to be very solidly constructed. Does require a VERY stable tripod -- don't skimp there. Separately purchased adapter allows simple connection to my digital SLR with good pictures resulting. Carrying case is designed to provide excellent protection.

Works well for what I wanted: looking over the surrounding scenic and marine landscapes. I have not yet tried it for astronomical observation. May be so obvious that there's no need to say it but it's too powerful and too bulky to be useful for watching wildlife -- unless they are sleeping. Or, maybe, a tired sloth. :-)

5List price is bogus but I like the scope
By John S. Dean
I have a 9 year old son who has been getting into things having to do with space. I've been contemplating a scope for a while now, but wanted something simple for him to be able to pick and choose what he'd like to see on his own. So clearly I had to get a computerized and motorized scope. I had been looking into some nice dobs, but since I didn't know how long his interest would last, I didn't want to spend a lot of money for the scope, since it may end up sitting in a room somewhere most of the time if his interest wanes. So I grabbed this on a gold box offer, about 33% off the "real" price - their list price here I've never seen it go for, even on the Celestron website where it's only a couple bucks more than here.

With Amazon Prime, I got it in two days. But then it sat for a few weeks waiting for a night without rain or clouds. Tonight was finally it, kind of. A nearly full moon, but a lot of wispy clouds up there after sunset, giving me only about 15 stars to reference my location from. Toss on top of that the cold temps meant I wanted to stay home, not drag my poor son out somewhere farther in the country away from this much ambient light so we were left on my back patio, with my house blocking about 30% of the available sky. Between being in my back yard in a suburban neighborhood, lots of ambient light, neighbors with back patio lights on, and the clouds, I didn't even tell him I was setting it up out there because I fully expected it to not be able to determine its location. I got it in place, powered it up (I hate the battery pack, more about that later), and told it to figure out where it was. I came back inside to warm up and watch some TV with him while it whirred away out there. A couple minutes later I went out there and watched the controller, where it talked about what percentage of that part of the sky it finished scanning, and at one point I saw it say "not enough stars." I thought, "Yep, I figured as much." And I was ready to cart it back in, but it kept going. I guess that message meant that one part it tried to reference didn't have enough stars, so it went to another portion of the sky. All told, even with all the clouds, it took it less than 4 minutes to figure out where it was. Just the fact that it said it was ready was impressive, so I thought let's see how it actually does. The moon is nearly full, not too far over the roof of my neighbors house, so I grabbed the controller and told it to go to the moon.

Now, I had not read the instructions, so that's a good sign that this system is pretty easy to use and very intuitive for the controls. There's also a "Back" button that makes things almost like traversing directories in a computer. You get to a point in the control menu, then just hit "back" to go up one level. So when I was doing "solar system" and wanted to then try "deep space" I couldn't just hit Deep Space while at Solar System, I had to hit "back" first. Easy enough once you work it out.

So I said "Moon" and it moved itself there. Wasn't quite spot on, but the moon was in the field of view so that was a win for me. I was using the lower power eyepiece at first, so the moon only filled up about 60 or 70 percent of it. Nice and crisp though. Got my son out, and he thought it was the coolest thing. I then swapped out to the high power eyepiece, and I was VERY surprised. The field of view could not even cover the whole moon, just part of it, it was so large. As I said, it was not QUITE a full moon, and I was amazed when I looked at the edge, the magnification was so much, and it was so clear, that I could see the edges of craters against the edge like mountains, with the black of space behind them. The clarity of the craters was just mind numbing, and seeing them like that rising above the edge of the disc like mountains was just something I hadn't expected from such a relatively small and inexpensive scope. And there are better eyepieces you can buy for this still, so I'm looking forward to seeing just what this baby can do.

With the cloud cover, I couldn't get at the deep space objects, or even most of the stars. But with the surprising magnification of the moon, I'm getting more power than I had anticipated, so I'll be happy when the skies clear. I already know I'm not going to see Neptune as some large body like the moon, I just want to see some of the things I can.

The motor noise is noticeable, but not annoying. Slight whirr/click as it tracks objects for you as well.

The base is surprisingly steady, and includes a level. It has the typical mostly useless "shelf" under the scope.

Now, the battery pack is a piece of junk. Totally useless, and the first thing I'm going to try to find a better alternative for. It's just this poorly formed plastic junk that holds all the D cell batteries in it, and it's not even shaped well enough to let them TOUCH the contacts at the positive end on two spots because the springs aren't even tough enough to push the batteries up against them vs. the slight tension from the unit as a whole on the batteries. Toss on top of that there's no place designed to hold the battery pack. You can place it on the little shelf but then you're not going to be using it for anything else... Best thing I found so far was to take the little loop on the bag and hang it over the autofinder barrel that does the star sensing when it's powered up. But even then as the scope traverses it bumps against the tops of the tripod legs. Horrible design.

Focus knobs move very smoothly though, and are geared well so there's some fine focusing available.

As long as you realize you won't see Pluto other than a faint light, and that the things you see from the Hubble aren't the same things you'll see from here, this is a surprisingly good scope, especially if you want to skip the part that's half the fun for regular astronomers, finding things yourself. The fact that even in the most sub-optimal conditions, my back yard, neighbors with lights on, clouds, yet it still found where it was quickly, was enough for me to realize this was going to be a good buy.

5On sale it is a great deal!
By nine44
Living in the consumer electronics age, it is extrememly difficult to get kids to patiently wait for Dad to fiddle with the telescope for hours in order to see an interesting feature of the night sky. This is a great way to get them hooked early. Put it outside and flip the switch and it aligns itself. From there, you simply select the object you want to see. Orion's Nebula? Done. Jupiter and its moons? Done. It works really well!

Once your kid sees what they can't see with their naked eyes, they are likely to get hooked on this hobby--along with developing a deeper understanding of the sky, of telescopes and of astronomy in general. But if your kid's first experience is frustrating and boring--they're not likely to give it a second go.

Personally, I would not pay $500 for this telescope though the skysense technology really works well. The scope that is included is pretty good--and for what I paid, I am very happy ($229). I can use this mount with more capable telescopes that I have. I don't want to talk too much trash about the included scope--it's preety good for a starter--but $500, skysense or no skysense, is a little steep.

Nonetheless--the closest thing out there to this is Meade's 6" Cassegrain on the Light Switch mount for something like $1500. It's a better scope on a much sturdier tripod. But if your goal is to hook your kids on astronomy without blowing their inheritance this is the current cheapest, simplest solution out there.

5Great way to start to learn the night sky!
By Michael J. Wood
I ordered my SkyScout in September, hoping that the initial rush on this item was over and that it would be in stock (as listed) when I ordered it. Sadly, it was actually out of stock, and took a few months to arrive. The unit powered up and seemed to function, but was unable to get a GPS fix in a clear field. Hoping that it was a simple matter of updating the unit, I attached it via USB to my computer and followed the simple directions on the screen. It updated quickly and easily, but I still was unable to obtain a GPS fix. Using the instructions provided, I contacted Celestron, and was directed to return the unit to them for evaluation and repair. Less than two weeks passed, when a new unit straight from Celestron arrived in the mail. This one worked perfectly and as advertised, and without any problems!

Now that I've actually used my SkyScout, I can say that it is great fun to use! Now, December and January in Wyoming isn't the best time of year to be outside at night...wind chill last night was -40F for example, but the SkyScout still works like a champ. Multiple modes of function exist as listed in the description, but my personal favorite is being able to identify just about anything you can see with the naked eye in the night sky. Just view the object through the sky scout, push a button, and you'll get the name of the object as well as at least a few lines of text of information. Brighter objects or better known objects also have an audio commentary that will teach about the history and/or significance of what you're looking at.

While I was disappointed about my first SkyScout not functioning properly, the quick customer service and the replacement working flawlessly have overcome my initial disappointment. The SkyScout is quite simple to use and provides a great way for anyone who can read to start to learn the night sky. I highly recommend it for individuals with an interest in astronomy, families, star parties, and youth groups such as the Boy Scouts.

5A Revolution in Astronomy
By Tom Campbell
I have literally been waiting for the Skyscout all my life. I always wanted to be able to look in the sky and identify celestial bodies but just didn't have the kind of brain that could wrap itself around star charts. Nor did I know anyone who could stand there and discuss it with me on a chilly night.

The Skyscout is like no other astronomy-related device because for the first time, you can just take it out of the box, put in the batteries, wait a few seconds for it to find its location via GPS (same as a car navigation system), point at something in the sky and press the IDENTIFY button to have it identified to you. Think about that for a second. At last, you have an easy-to-use handheld device that can tell you what star or star formation you're looking at!

Or you can work the other way. Have it list celestial bodies and formations for you, press the LOCATE button, then helpful arrows in the readout will blink until you've pointed it in the right direction. And many of the entries in its database have audio accompaniment so you can learn about them through the included earphones! How cool is that? It has a slot that will eventually accept cartridges with more stuff as time goes by, but the built-in database is pretty big as it is.

And for what it's worth, because the Skyscout uses built-in GPS, you can use it to display your locaiton using GPS coordinates. I have a nav system on my car but the SkyScout is still better than that, because I can't figure out how to get that info out of the car! on the Skyscout it's just one button.

All this stuff is particularly easy to access, and even the error messages are helpful. For example, on one particularly cold Seattle night I tried to use it from inside my car. A magnet icon popped up, and an error message explained that magnetic interference by something such as the chassis of an automobile was impeding it. Slick.

The gizmos currently included with high-end telescopes come nowhere near this facility. First off, you need a telescope with you. The Skyscout is the size of a hotel alarm clock and has its own (non-magnified) viewer. Just whip this thing out of your pocket and go to town. Second, the ones with telescopes are agonizingly slow to calibrate, like half an hour or so, and must be reoriented every time you pick up the 'scope and move. Plus you have to enter all kinds of location and time information on many of them; the Skyscout just finds itself. And finally, none of them of course can simply tell you what you've pointed the 'scope at. The Skyscout can. I also need to emphasize that it neither needs nor comes with an 80-page manual like the ones that come with telescopes. It's like 1 printed sheet, and that's plenty. The UI is very, very simple.

This is a revolutionary 1.0 product. My only complaint is that goes through batteries like I eat Lucky Charms. Bring an extra set when you go out. Oh, and one reviewer said that for $400 it should come with a lens cap. Fair enough. But remember that the optics are almost irrelevant--it's just a plastic cover so you can see the lighted guides pointing you in the right direction. Get a fingerprint on it, fine--just wipe it off with any lens tissue. The unit won't be damaged, nor will its usefulness be affected in any way by a dirty lens. Your telescope has the magnfication and the useful optics. If you even brought it with you--I never have, so far!

5I LOVE IT...
By Jeffrey Mercado
Well worth the wait, this Skyscout delivers. It does exactly as advertised. I live in New York City, not exactly the astronomy capital of the world. So I was a bit hesitant to order because of the limited visibility here in the city. I ordered mine from Amazon on June 11 and was tired of waiting for my order to be fulfilled. So I ordered when I noticed the Discovery Store had it in stock. I had to pay more in shipping and tax but I HAVE IT IN HAND!!!

The Skyscout comes with

one skyscout, a padded case, earphones, wrist strap, usb cable, quick start guide, and instructional CD-ROM

Setup is a snap. Just insert two fresh double A's in the protective shields inside the battery compartment. Tighten the screw and hold the power button until you get the startup screen which reads SKYSCOUT.

After that the GPS kicks in to locate exactly where you are. That takes about a minute or so. You then press continue and your ready to go. You can choose from: Identify, Locate, GPS, Field Guide, and Settings. Tonight I went to Cunningham Park, stood in the middle, and started the show.

Under the option Locate, you search for planets, stars, deep space objects, and it also gives you the option to choose tonights highlights. This narrows space down to what you can see that night. Brightest stars, planets, constellations, whatever you are in the mood for.

I started out looking at Jupiter. I pressed the identify button and it tells you to search for a star and press the target button.

I pointed to the biggest and brightest star and the Skyscout identified it was Jupiter. It then gives you the option of getting information in text form, or by audio narrative. The Skyscout contains audio narration for over 200 hundred celestial objects. I am sure Celestron will add more to that number with updates. It is a great feature that brings your star gazing to life.

The skyscout is great, but as with any new technology it has its bugs.

My skyscout on a number of occasions just shut off. I would have to power it back on and wait for the GPS to relocate my point of origin. It happened about five or six times, today and yesterday. I have no idea why it happens. I was in the middle of the park so I do not believe there was any magnetic interference. It was fustrating and disappointing, I got over it. I love this thing.

One thing I felt could be improved was the viewfinder. I live in the light polluted city so I feel that if it had a wider field of vision it would be much easier to locate what you want to see. You need dark skies and I understand that, but if it had a wider field of vision I would be able to see the stars much easier. There are two red led rings within the viewfinder that provide directional arrows to find an object. But maybe if those rings were shutoff while you are looking through the veiwfinder it would be easier to see the stars as well. Just my opinion. It is a zero magnification viewfinder so you do not have to hold it up to your eye.

The skyscout is worth every penny. It gets five stars for doing what it is supposed to do. If you have children you will have hours of fun with them. If your an adult and love star gazing, grab the wife as I did and have some fun. You will not be disappointed. Unless of course yours shuts off for no reason too.

  • Sturdy aluminum cell
  • Secured with nylon thumb screw
  • Direct view or photography of the sun

Product Description

This is a safe full aperture solar filter. This means that it allows the most light possible into the telescope because it allows the full aperture of your telescope to be viewed. The full aperture allows the best possible daytime viewing when there is minimal atmospheric turbulence. If turbulence is present a mask can be put over the end of the filter to effectively reduce the aperture. This premium solar filter has an aluminum cell that is secured to the tube end of the telescope with a three nylon thumb screws. The clear aperture is made with high quality hand selected and inspected reflective coated glass. This 5" full aperture glass solar filter is the highest quality, most durable solar filter on the market. The sun is safely viewed in a natural yellowish-orange image. The neutral density is 5 - 5.5. The filter can be used for direct viewing through the telescope or for photography. It will fit a telescope with a tube end (opposite the eyepiece) diameter of 4 7/8"(124mm) to 4 5/8"(117mm). You can measure the diameter of the end of your telescope to see if this filter will fit. This filter is new in the box in plastic. The filter box is foam lined for protection and shock absorption during handling. It is durable enough to store the filter while not in use. With the filter comes instructions for use and care.

5Great for viewing Solar flares
By DenAlex89
I purchased this solar filter to view the sun through my Orion Apex 102mm scope. It was easy to fit on the scope using the rubber pad adjuster strips. Slightly tighten the screw after attaching to the scope and then point it at the sun! Caution!!! Do not use the finder scope to sight in the sun! Leave the finder scope lens caps on both ends. With the filter in place, viewing the sun and the dark spots and actually viewing a few solar flares is awesome! Try it, you'll like it!
