The Celestron CGEM 800 arrives in three boxes; one box contains the telescope, another box contains the tripod and counter weight, and the last box contains the computerized mount. Make sure you are home to receive delivery of these components; getting them all into my car would have been a tight fix had I gone to my delivery center to pick them up. The delivery weight of all of the components are around 50 pounds. Constructing the telescope was rather straight forward. I have hard flowing in my house and found that the small contact surface of the tripod feet together with the weight of the telescope put enough pressure on my floor to cause small dents to appear. If you have hard flooring like I do then you will want to get something to put between the floor and the tripod feet such as a mat or the Celestron Vibration Suppression Pads.

Before purchasing this telescope I had considered the Celestron NexStar 8 SE Telescope. I decided against it because some one else with one had warned that the type of mount it used was not able to compensate for the earth's rotation precisely enough for long exposure photography.

The telescope requires access to power. It comes with both a wall adapter and a 12 volt adapter for a car. If you plan on using the telescope at any spot that is not within reach of your car or your house then you will want to get a Celestron Power Tank to power the telescope. In addition to providing power this unit has both a spotlight and a flashlight with a red filter so that you can illuminate your area without diminishing the sensitivity of your eyes. When I use the telescope I use it on my deck if I am observing things with my eyes but use it on the ground when doing long term exposure. I've found on my deck vibrations from me walking translate over to the telescope too much.

Once the telescope is setup it is easy to use; Once you have completed the polar alignment steps you can use the remote to either adjust the direction in which the telescope is pointing in steps or identify the object you want to see and let the telescope's mount take care of finding it; the remote has the coordinates of over 40,000 heavenly bodies.

Before this purchase I had been using an older Celestron telescope from before the days that motorized mounts were common. I have to say this is a huge upgrade.

The unit comes with a 25mm eyepiece, a wall power supply, a 12-volt power supply (for a vehicle or the Power Tank), and the NexRemote control software. Most computers do not have serial powers so if you make use of the remote software you will want to buy a USB to RS232 Serial Adapter. The software only works on 32-bit computers. Total bummer since all of my computers are 64-bit. I had to run the software in a virtual machine to make it work.

If you are curious about the telescope and want to read about its operation in more details Celestron has the manual available online.
