Good telescope, but Celestron does not give full specs upfront

This is a very nice telescope. I have been using it the past week and have viewed the Moon, Venus, Jupiter. Overall the optics are excellent. But there are a few issues, which had I known earlier I may not have purchased this scope.
1. Celestron advertises that the scope can be used with 8 AA batteries. This is not completely true. The batteries drain very quickly and will probably not even last one viewing session (say 30 mins).
2. Without power the telescope cannot be moved along the azimuth (left-right direction). So you cannot use it at all.
So essentially if you want to take this telescope out of the city to some dark sky location you have to buy a powertank (or maybe run it off your car). I would have liked a design that allows me to use the goto feature when I want it but still be able to slew the telescope manually, without power.
Why do I still give it 3 stars. Well, Celestron tech support is very responsive (over e-mail). The telescope itself is excellent (optically). I have gotten very good views of planets. It has been a little too cloudy and light polluted (I live in a city) for me to try seeing nebulae.
Details:
The DC motors that slew the telescope are very sensitive to the voltage and current of the power supply. If you use the telescope for 20-30 minutes after that the batteries drain down and the scope becomes unusable (till you replace the batteries of course). Celestron tech support told me that they recommend using the battery only as an emergency back up!!! Strange that they don't mention on their website that batteries are only for "backup" and you have to run the telescope on wall socket, or a "power tank".

Celestron Nexstar 5 SE

It was cold as heck out, but I've owned my Celestron NexStar 5 SE telescope (my first scope) for three days now and the sky was fairly clear; so out I go. I whip through the Sky Align auto alignment process and then ask the telescope to show me Saturn (FYI: I had already aligned my finder scope during the day, something I highly recommend). There it was, rings and all, as advertized near the center of my eyepiece. Awesome!! I took a quick peak at Mars and then went back inside before my fingers fell off from frostbite. I am hooked!

Excellent telescope for the beginning amateur astronomer

This is a great telescope for those who are getting into amateur astronomy. First of all, the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope design offers great focal length at a compact size and are generally cheaper than refractors. Portability was one of my biggest purchasing points. Celestron's reputation was another buying point for me, in addition to other reviews about this particular telescope. I have used it a couple times since receiving it this week and I'm very happy with my purchase. For those who are considering buying the Celestron NexStar 5SE and are just getting into this hobby, I strongly recommend that you read the manual prior to using it, for you are investing a decent chunk of money on this telescope, and it deserves to be taken care of and used as intended.
On to the good stuff, the pros and the cons.
PRO's: The optics are very impressive, and the telescope is collimated at the factory, so there's no need to worry about that when you take it out of the box. Images are razor sharp and the light-gathering amount (aperture) is more than good enough to view your typical solar system objects like the moon and the planets. I was especially impressed with the fact that I was able to see the following objects under considerably light polluted conditions (including the moon in a late Waxing Gibbous phase): M57 (Ring Nebula), M11 (Wild Duck Cluster), M16 (Eagle Nebula), NGC 869 and NCG 884 (Double Cluster), M6 (Butterfly Cluster), and of course--Saturn. The tracking on the NexStar 5SE is acceptable to say the least. Additionally, I'm very happy with the portability of this telescope, especially considering the high focal length compared to its size. Also, I was able to put it together in less than 10 minutes.
CON's: Battery life. The NexStar 5SE can run on 8 AA batteries, but that won't be enough if planning on extended observing. I'm running my 5SE on 8 rechargeable Energizer 1400 mAh NiMH batteries, and I was able to squeeze a little less than 2 hours out of it before the declining tracking accuracy and motor stalling made it obvious that the batteries were drained. I strongly recommend purchasing a Celestron power tank and an AC adapter for extensive observing, which in itself has it limitations because the adapter is subject to cord wrap. Also, if the batteries are taken out of the telescope, one has to reconfigure the time, date, and coordinates when batteries are re-inserted. The finder scope was a little tedious to align as well, but with time and patience, aligning it right will give you the most accurate tracking possible. The tracking is also not perfect--when I found the ring nebula, it went just outside my eye piece's field of view, but with a slight manual tweak, I got it back into view and was very amazed at what I had seen!
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS: I'm giving it four stars because of the battery life, the cord wrap when using an AC adapter, and the considerable effort put into aligning the finder scope, which I strongly recommend doing during the day on a distant object like a street light or a communication tower. Aside its limitations, I was very impressed with the quality of the images, the portability, and the ease of assembly. My recommendations are as follows: READ THE MANUAL BEFORE USING THE TELESCOPE! Buy an AC adapter and a Celestron power tank if viewing is planned for several hours. Also, buy a Barlow lens, which will increase the magnification of your eye pieces. I purchased a Celestron Omni 2x Barlow. Eye pieces can make all the difference in the world, but why settle for a set that can cost you hundreds of dollars? I recommend the Celestron 8-24mm zoom eyepiece (93230); it will save you money and space. In conclusion, I highly recommend this telescope for the beginning stargazer. Learn the ropes of this excellent product before graduating to the bigger, more sophisticated telescopes.
One last word of advice--the images seen through the telescope are NOT going to be like the Hubble or Kepler telescope photos seen on the Internet. Those photos are the result of long exposure astrophotography and the complete absence of atmospheric turbulence. Our eyes are very poor at processing colors in the dark, so deep sky objects like nebulae and galaxies will be seen in shades of grey, or black-and-white. Nevertheless, seeing those things through a NexStar 5SE was a truly amazing experience for me, and this was under considerably light polluted skies that also included the light from the moon in a very late Waxing Gibbous phase (where it's nearly full). I can only imagine how much more star clusters and nebulae are going to stand out with the absence of moonlight. I can hardly wait!
