Beautiful scope with decent optics
By Mark
I already had a variety of astronomical scopes, ranging from an ED 80 up to an 11-inch SCT and 16-inch Newtonian. But I wanted a vintage-looking brass telescope to set up in my office for an occasional peak at the moon or planets (when there is too little time, or the weather is too marginal, to justify opening up the observatory). Unfortunately, most of the brass reproduction scopes that I have seen are optically pathetic, and most don't offer interchangeable eyepieces. This scope is different. It looks vintage, but uses standard 1.25 inch eyepieces and has respectable optics. I haven't star tested it, but the daylight views are sharp and contrasty. For the sake of brevity, I'll just summarize the good and the not-so-good:
THE GOOD:
- Beautiful polished brass everywhere, except of course for the nicely finished mahogany tripod legs. Even the erect-image diagonal, eyepiece barrel, and lens caps are brass. Everyone in the family agrees that this scope is a beautiful addition to the room.
- Nice optics, just fine for daytime viewing and casual nighttime views.
- Looks antique, but has modern improvements where it matters most (such as optical design and interchangeable eyepieces).
THE NOT-SO-GOOD:
- It is a bit awkward to move the scope in and out of the house. The tripod legs will not fold inward unless you remove the accessory tray (secured by 3 sets of wing nuts, washers, and machine screws). You can make the task easier by shortening the tripod legs. But either way it is tricky maneuvering the assembled scope through doorways, and disassembling the scope is too time consuming to be worth the effort.
- The vintage altazimuth mount design precludes observing closer than about 45 degrees to the zenith. Again, this scope is optimized for terrestrial viewing.
- The mount is smooth and easy to move in altitude, but a bit stiff in azimuth movement. I should be able to adjust that though (using a nut on the under side of the mount head).
- The mount is not exactly rock solid, and takes at least 2 or 3 seconds to settle down after a bump. That said, it seems steady enough for terrestrial viewing when using the included 25 mm (Plossl?) eyepiece.
- I have grown accustomed to Crayford focusers. So it is a bit difficult to get used to this rack and pinion focuser. I am also surprised how far you must rack out the eyepiece to achieve focus on distant targets. But it works well enough - not overly difficult to move and stays where you put it.
- As mentioned in the manual, there are a few minor imperfections in the brass finish. Specifically, I spotted a few very small dents and a scratch on the side of the optical tube. I suppose it is difficult to avoid, and impossible to hide, small imperfections in this much polished brass surface area. Fortunately, I personally don't find these small surface flaws objectionable. I would not even have noticed them if I hadn't been looking for them. (My family members also failed to see them.)
- Frankly, I would have preferred not to have the Celestron logo engraved in big letters on both sides of the optical tube assembly. I certainly don't have anything against Celestron or their name. But this prominent branding of the tube takes away from its otherwise vintage appearance.
All things considered, this scope does exactly what I wanted it to do - it looks great when I look at it, and even offers pleasing views when I look through it.

brass telescope
By whipper
The brass celestron came fast, was well packaged, and was easy to assemble. The finish and appearance is excellent. The optics are very nice. For terrestrial viewing it is excellent. I use it to watch boats from my patio and I can see very well.

very nice

ordered for $450 as a amazon warehouse product, not a mark on it and could not tell it was not brand new. Very good optics, clear and crisp. Very stable tripod. It's pretty heavy but sure looks great in a room. Would like more power but you could not expect more for an 80mm. I can tell the species of fish the boats are catching at about 1 mile away. Cruise ship fills in half the viewing field at about 10 miles away. Recommend.
